The peace and purity in the air on Formentera are the island's trademark feature. To preserve it, the Formentera Council is implementing a system to regulate vehicle flow on the island. The goal is sustainability, now and for generations to come.

Getting started

During the summer months of July and August (peak season when visitor traffic is highest) Formentera's population triples, and cars on the road increase in kind.

What is clear from the flow of tourists and number of vehicles brought to and driven on the island is that action is needed to ensure the island's future environmental and economic sustainability.

To that end, the Formentera Council petitioned the Balearic government (Govern de les Illes Balears) to introduce ground-breaking legislation at the national level to enable the island's administration to cap vehicle ingress and regulate permits to drive on local roads in summer. The move is about maintaining environmental harmony and making sure that visitors and islanders can enjoy the tranquillity they expect to find.

Regulating vehicle flow

In accordance with legislation adopted for Formentera's environmental and economic stability, the inbound transit, operation and parking of all types of motor vehicles will be regulated.

Period of application

From 1 June until 30 September 2024 (both inclusive).

Vehicle limits

A maximum of 11,454 motor vehicles can be brought to the island and driven and parked on public roads. Thus, this year 2024 the number of vehicles in circulation on the island will be reduced by 16% compared to the previous year. This breaks the upward trend that the island has been experiencing in recent years and decades.

Limits enforced in each vehicle category:

  • Personal vehicles:
    • Cars: 2,080
    • Motorcycles: 182
    • Quads: 0
    • Caravans and motorhomes: 0
  • Personal vehicles of Eivissa residents:
    • Cars: 220
    • Motorcycles: 20
    • Quads: 0
    • Caravans and motorhomes: 0
  • Rental vehicles without associated driver:
    • Cars: 2.268
    • Motorcycles: 5.880
    • Quads: 0
    • Caravans and motorhomes: 0

Quads are restricted due to the damage such vehicles do to Formentera’s network of roads, particularly unpaved ones (the local standard).

Caravans and motorhomes are restricted because camping is prohibited in Formentera and the island lacks spaces set aside for this activity.

The following vehicles are exempt from regulation:

  • Vehicles belonging to residents of Formentera.
  • Vehicles belonging to owners with a second home in Formentera (1 vehicle per owner only)
  • Vehicles belonging to residents of Ibiza who work in Formentera
  • Vehicles belonging to individuals with reduced mobility
  • Vehicles belonging to commercial distribution companies
  • Official vehicles and public service vehicles
  • Vehicles providing services in the public interest
  • Industrial vehicles
  • Historical vehicles owned by members of classic vehicle clubs
  • Once the quotas have been filled, vehicles intended for private use whose owners have a reservation for accommodations on the island and/or a boat with destination in Formentera, from before March 11 (date of the regulation’s publication in the Official Bulletin of the Balearic Islands, or BOIB)
