An island’s commitment to its future and sustainability

Formentera is a fragile paradise. With a small island territory of just 83.2 km² and a road network of only 38.5 km, our island faces a critical challenge every summer: the risk of saturation and the imbalance of its ecosystem.

The growth of tourism flows in recent years has made clear the need to act:

  • Demographic saturation: In July and August, the population more than triples, increasing from 13,400 residents to over 44,000 people during peak season.
  • Vehicle congestion: In the summer of 2017 alone, nearly 29,000 motor vehicles arrived. Combined with the internal fleet of more than 20,000 vehicles, this generates excessive pressure on our road network.
  • Environmental impact: Excess traffic directly threatens biodiversity and the conservation of ecological treasures protected by the Natura 2000 Network and ANEI areas (Natural Areas of Special Interest).

In response to this situation, Law 7/2019 of February 8, on the environmental and economic sustainability of the island of Formentera, was born from the shared concern of authorities and society. Its objective is clear: to guarantee a tourism, economic, social and environmentally sustainable model that preserves the island’s future.

Formentera.eco: is the tool that allows us to control vehicle access to Formentera.

Application period: From June 1 to September 30, 2026 (both inclusive).

Vehicle cap: 10,287 motor vehicles (including access, circulation and parking on the island), distributed according to the following quotas:

  • Vehicles for private use:
    • Cars: 1,732
    • Motorcycles: 122
    • Quads: 0
    • Caravans and motorhomes: 0
  • Vehicles for private use by residents of the island of Ibiza:
    • Cars: 235
    • Motorcycles: 50
    • Quads: 0
    • Caravans and motorhomes: 0
  • Vehicles for rental activity without driver:
    • Cars: 2,268
    • Motorcycles: 5,880
    • Quads: 0
    • Caravans and motorhomes: 0

A zero quota is established for quads in order to preserve Formentera’s road network and protect its unique dirt tracks. Likewise, access for caravans and motorhomes is restricted, as island regulations prohibit camping and the territory does not have infrastructure for their stay.
